Palak Dal

Healthy spinach and lentils.

Main Ingredients Toor Dal, Spinach

Palak Dal is prepared using spinach and toor daal. The toor dal is high in protein and fibre and low in fat and it has mild ,often earthy flavour. And the combination of this lentil and highly nutritious spinach, makes it balanced and healthy dish. It is very healthy for all ages, especially growing children.

  • 100 gms spinach (palak)
  • 1/2 cup - toor dal
  • 1 medium sized finely chopped - onion
  • 1 tsp chopped - garlic
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp (optional) red chilli powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1 whole dried red chilly
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  1. Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds and whole dried red chilly and stir for few seconds.
  2. Add garlic and stir for half a minute.
  3. Now add onion and fry it until it become transculent.
  4. Then add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt and mix well.
  5. Then add chopped spinach and fry it for one minute.
  6. Now add washed toor dal and 2 cups of water. Close the lid and increase the flame to high.
  7. After one whistle lower the flame to minimum and let it cook for 20 minutes.

Serving Instructions

You can serve this with rice or roti.
