Mache Jhol is a Bengali home affair. It's made in every Bengali household almost every day. It is very low is spices and the gravy is very runny similar to a stew. It makes a good comfort food in winter. Also fish is good for health so it is healthy as well.

  1. In a large bowl marinate the fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt or 5 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile heat the mustard oil to smoking point and fry till both the sides are crisp. This will take about 10 minutes . Remove and keep aside.
  3. In another wok heat 2 tbsp of mustard oil till smoking point.
  4. Reduce the heat and add the Nigella seeds, green chillies and bay leave. Sauté for 30 seconds.
  5. Make a paste of cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and red chilli powder with 1 tbsp of water or more.
  6. Add this mixture to the oil along with salt and fry till oil separates from the spice mixture.
  7. Add 1 ½ cup of water and add the sliced potatoes.
  8. Cook covered till the potatoes are done.
  9. Add the fried fish pieces and cook till it comes to a boil
  10. Cook covered for 5 minutes.
  11. Serve hot.

Serving Instructions

Serve it hot with plain boiled rice
